Photo Session with a ’38 Chevy Pickup

Yesterday evening I got a chance to leave the city limits for a photo session with a beautifully well-done ’38 Chevy pickup. The owner, Len, had bought the truck after the previous owner botched an attempt to build a hot rod out of it. Thankfully, Len put his mad skills to work in handcrafting this piece of V-8 powered art.

Under the hood is a 400ci small block Chevy engine pulled from a ’71 Caprice, bolted to a 4-speed automatic. The truck sits real low, thanks to Len’s modifications to the rear half of the frame and a reproduction Mustang-II suspension welded to the front. However, the coolest part of the truck is all the detail that’s gone into it while retaining an overall Rat Rod look. The dash only has the original three holes for the guages, but they’re filled with guages from a late 80′s GM sedan. The headlights are where Louis Chevrolet meant them to go, but the housings are from a passenger car of the same era. And to finish it all off, the bodywork is as straight and perfect as a Chip Foose restoration, but it’s covered in John Deere Black for that semi-gloss, Car Kulture look.

Len is also fortunate enough to still have his first car–a ’40 Chevy Sedan–that he turned into a show-quality hot rod in 1994. The plan is to do a full photo session on both vehicles for a magazine feature article, pitting the flashy hot rod sedan against the semi-gloss pickup.

Speaking of which, keep an eye on your local news stand for Canadian Hot Rods & Classics Magazine. The Jan/Feb issue has a 4-page spread on the Pony Corral Sunday Night Cruise written by yours truly! As of this writing, the issue should be on a truck heading towards Winnipeg, and on the news stands any day now. If you want to get your own copy, Chapters at St. Vital Mall and Rand McNally at Grant Park have ordered extra issues, and Dominion News downtown always has lots of stock.

  1. Awesome Pick-Up!

  2. That truck belongs to my brother and it pulled his holiday trailer on holidays with us out to B.C. and back to MB through the U.S. this past Summer. The point being it not only looks good, but it works good. Next time you’re talking to him ask him what he uses for a heater fan.
