F1 teams to Max Mosely: “Screw you guys, I’m going home.”
Eight teams of the top teams in Formula 1 racing have decided to break away and form their own racing league, after negotiations on F1′s proposed spending cap fell apart.
According to reports, the new league is set to begin in the 2010 season, and “will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders,” according to the statement.
The eight founding teams (Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing, and Toro Rosso) have assured us that all the big guns currently in F1 will make the jump to the new league for the 2010 start date.
Will this be the new highest class of motorsports? Or is this just a ploy for the big teams to get what they want? If it’s a sincere attempt at a new league, this could turn into the baddest, most aggressive form of racing on the planet. And even though the concept didn’t work for Vince McMahon and his XFL Football league, maybe they’ll make a go of this one….
**UPDATE**: Jalopnik now has a full-length (or, as full-length as Jalopnik gets) editorial on the so-called “death of F1.” Check it out here to see what the experts think!
