Hot Rod Liz Gives’em Hell!

When Winnipeg’s own “Hot Rod Liz” Kitzul began turning a Ford Model A coupe’s rusted remains into a “yard art” flower planter, she had no idea the car-shaped art installation would drive her to City Hall’s bylaw appeals committee.

After a neighbor complained to the city over Kitzul’s planter, made from the body panels of her grandfather’s favourite car, the city placed an order to have the car removed.  Liz was forced to appeal her case to the Protection and Community Services Committee.

Winnipeg Councillor Jenny Gerbasi was rumored to have opened the proceedings with “why are we even talking about this?”  Although a lengthy discussion occurred on the subject, the committee voted 4-0 in favour of keeping the art piece right where it was, and refunding the $250 appeal fee.

Hot Rod Liz's Model A Planter

The planter isn’t ready to bloom so brightly, but this computer rendering of the final product (which may-or may not-have been assembled by a local hot rod website’s crack editorial team) was presented to committee as one possibility for the art piece’s end design.  Whatever the end product looks like, Hot Rod Liz has made life a little bit brighter for all gearheads, knowing that anti-hot rod mucky-mucks now have a little less clout against us.
