The Stig Takes His Helmet Off!
Most of you know about a little TV show on the BBC (not Coronation Street) that’s been egging on gearheads with zany antics, witty humor, and “build-a-car” challenges that are somewhere between stupidly dangerous and stupidly hillarious (dangerous/hillarious, same thing really).
That show is called Top Gear, and it’s by far one of the most amazing television programs out there. Between pushing new exotics to destruction on the racetrack and blatantly destroying old crappers in the most flamboyant way possible, there’s little that these guys can’t do and get away with-something that’s becoming more and more difficult in Britain.
Last night, however, will go down as one of the most important episodes ever. That’s because their silent, anonymous test driver (known only as “The Stig”) was unmasked as none other than Formula One racing champ Michael Schumacher.
Amid all the media hoopla, some question Schumi’s role in the whole thing. Granted, The Stig is certainly an exceptional driver-just like Schumacher-but what’s the chances he has been the masked crusader for Top Gear’s entire 13-year run? Pretty slim, to be honest. And it’s not as if we don’t know about other stigs that have appeared in the series. Remember the Black Stig from way back in the day? And what about the American Stig? According to multiple sources (well, Jalopnik at least) the Ferrari FXX being tested by the stig was allegedly owned by Schumacher himself. And hey, if you had a car that incredible-and that exclusive-would you hand the keys over to some weirdo that no one knows?
