Car Thieves Have No Taste
The Insurance Bureau of Canada has just released their list of the most stolen cars this year, and there’s good news: If you have even a shred of good taste in cars, your car is safe.
The 2000 Honda Civic SiR has been named the “most stolen car in Canada,” with the ’02 and ’04 Escalade coming in second and third. The rest of the list is littered with Acura and Hummer products, typical of the car theft industry in Canada. The Escalades and Hummers are stolen through organized crime, and then stripped for parts or exported to foreign countries that need rugged yet pimpin’ rides. The cars, meanwhile, are targeted by dumb kids who steal them for joyriding. And when I say “dumb,” I mean YouTube Glory kind of dumb.
Although the Civic takes top place across the country, some provinces show a regional flavour when it comes to their car theft. For example, the atlantic provinces are quite fond of stealing 1999 Dodge/Plymouth Neons (both 2- and 4-door), while the ’06 Ford F-250 pickup is, predictably, at the top of Alberta’s list.
Overall, car theft is down 15%, with only 108,172 people being separated from their rides in 2009.
