Announcing the “Camaro” Challenge

Earlier today, Jalopnik featured the recent review of the 2010 Camaro SS on Top Gear.  It went something like this:

Did you watch it to the end?  I didn’t.  Most true car fanatics wouldn’t, either.  It’s almost as if someone brought the Mercedes on-set to piss off Chevrolet, or to make American cars look bad, or some other petty, vindictive reason.

However, it does bring up a good point.  Here in Canada, the Camaro in the “2SS” trim package has 422 horsepower, 408 lbs. of torque, gets 19mpg, and has 93 cubic feet of interior space, all for a whopping $41,430.  The Mercedes E63 AMG has 518 horsepower, 465 lbs. of torque, gets 15mpg (which qualifies our American readers for an additional “guzzler tax”), and has 97 cubic feet of interior space, for a mere $106,900.  And no, it’s not available with an actual standard transmission.**

Now, Top Gear doesn’t really care about what a little website like this says, so I’m not going to call them names.  I’m just going to call them out.

What we need is someone-anyone-who has invested up to, and including, $106,900 into their 2010 Camaro.  And a track.  I’m throwing down the gauntlet for Top Gear and for Mercedes, to compete against a Camaro your own size (and price range.)  If you’ve dropped $2k on a supercharger, that’ll work.  If you’ve dropped $10k on a supercharger, bigger meats, lowered suspension, headers and a loud exhaust, that’s better.  And If you squeeze 500+ ponies out of a V6 Camaro, we DEFINITELY want to hear from you.

We also have no budget whatsoever, so don’t expect to receive any compensation or payment unless we pick up a big sponsor (GM?  Hennesey? Lingenfelter? Buhler?  Buhler?  Buhler?).  But, should you choose to accept the challenge, we’ll find a Benz, find a track, and find a video camera to make sure the results are spectacularly displayed on Youtube for all teh intrawebs to see.

Got car?  Shoot me an email at jordan.morningstar (at) gmail (dot) com.  Someone has to stand up to the hampster’s tyrrany, and that someone might just be you!

Daily Rodding: Import Rat Rod

We all know the (partially undeserved) reputation that the tuner community has for “quality,” what with the number of spray-bombed black hoods and plastic spinnah’ hubcaps out there.  What I’d like to know is, what will their ‘scene look like if the rat rod influence takes hold?  One guy couldn’t wait to find out:

funny car photos it doesnt get more classic than duct tape and cardboard

Thanks to thatwillbuffout.com for the duct-tapey awesomeness!

Canadian Car Exhibit opens at Science & Tech. Museum

There’s no doubt that the average Canadian has a serious love affair with their car.  But, what effect has this had on the vehicles we drive?

McLaughlin-Buick touring roadster for King George of England

The Canadian Science and Technology Museum has a new exhibit called “In Search of the Canadian Car.”  Presented by Toyota, the exhibit holds Canadian-built cars from the first steam-powered prototype to an ’89 Corolla, and even a McLaughlin-Buick touring sedan built for King George of England.  And yes, there’s a Bricklin SV-1 as well.

Woodies Galore!

There’s a lot of people who are obsessed with wood.  Most of them become lumberjacks or furniture makers.  However, Steve & Jeannete of Kingman Arizona take their extreme love of dead trees in a different direction:

1940 Ford Woody Wagon

Steve and Jeannette are the proud owners of several woody wagons from the late ’30s through the ’40s.  It’s a pretty crazy collection that also includes several “Steel Woodies,” or ’50s and ’60s cars with a combination of wood and fake wood panelling as decoration.  It’s an awesome collection that has to be seen to be believed.

But, since most of us don’t have the time or inclination to drive to Arizona to look over someone else’s cars, they’ve got a website at http://woodyworld.com.  It’s a great place to waste time that you’d otherwise spend working, and an even better place to see what wood-wagons look like on the inside.  You won’t regret having a look.  And if you do go, make sure to check out their sponsors-hey, server space ain’t free!

Holy TV-Series Batmobile Pictures, Batman!

The original Batmobile, from the TV series featuring Adam West

Despite what the Honda-driving, slurpee-sucking loudmouth kid at 7-11 says about his CR-V, there’s only one caped crusader who can pick up chicks with just his car-and that’s Batman.  At least that’s what he modestly calls himself-with the ability to pick up retro go-go hotties like this, BatLegend is closer to the truth!

Want to see more of the legendary car?  Check out this gallery of Batmobile photos from back in the day.  Firsthand accounts say the car handled and drove terribly (it was originally a concept car for Lincoln in 1955, never meant to leave the showroom floor), but in some of these pictures it had a classy, almost sporting shape to it.

**STOLEN VEHICLE ALERT**

Sadly, we have another stolen vehicle to keep an eye out for.  This time, it’s a two-tone ’83 Chevy Blazer from our friend Matt Self from Alberta.

Matt Self's stolen 1983 Chevy Blazer

It went missing last Friday, the 11th of June, before 2:30 pm.  The perp left behind a lot of broken glass, chunks of the steering column, and a trail of oil leading to the main road, where it tapered off.

New Hot Wheels on the way – ’86 Monte Carlo SS

In case any of you missed the secret announcement on Facebook, check this out:

Photo of a Mattel designer working on the latest release, leaked via Facebook

This was posted to the Facebook wall for the Hot Wheels fan page with the caption “Hey, Designer – Can you move a little to the right? You’re blocking my view of this unreleased 2010 New Model.”

Over the next twenty four hours, 142 people threw in guesses ranging from El Camino with a custom grille to a 4th-generation Camaro.  Finally, it was revealed that Mattel will finally be releasing an ’86 Chevy Monte Carlo SS in what’s believed to be the “mainline” series (aka, the ones you buy for a buck at Wal-Mart.)

This is great news for fans of the classic 2-door.  According to a quick Google search, the only miniature ’86 SS’s available right now are part of the “Donk” series from Revell.  Yeah, those things.  At long last, owners will be a great piece of dashboard candy for car shows, cruise nights, and anywhere else you want to torture parents and children simultaneously (“Daddy, I wanna play with those cars nnnoooowwwww!)  After all, we can’t let the PT Cruiser folks have all the fun.

Daily Roddin’: Thunderbird Special

Ford Thunderbird Special V8 Engine

This is an engine we’ve seen a lot of, but haven’s seen much information on:  This is the Ford Thunderbird Special V8, as seen in several Ford Not-Thunderbirds around town.  I’m assuming it was an available option, although the internet won’t confirm or deny anything for me.  If you know about this motor, please help us out by leaving a comment below.  Or, give us a shout on our Facebook page, where you can even upload your own pictures, and discuss them with other gearheads.

Daily Roddin’: 302 Mustang, like a boss….

1970 Boss 302 Mustang at Cruze-In Downtown, Winnipeg MB, 2009

We spotted this 1970 Boss 302 Mustang at last year’s Cruze-In Downtown show in Winnipeg.  It was just chillin’.  You know, like a boss:
