Darryl’s Drive In Blog Now Updated!

Darryl’s Drive In Blog is one of our favourite auto blogs out there–and not just because he’s said the same about us.  Darryl regularly compiles lists of interesting articles and online features throughout the interweb, and about once a month he publishes that list for the world to read.  It’s well worth the read–and if you don’t believe us, click here to check it out for yourself.

Daily Roddin’: 1951 Mercury Lead Sled

1951 Mercury Lead Sled

The license plate says it’s a 1951, and you can’t argue that it’s considered a “lead sled.”  But the colour–well, the jury’s still out on that.

Upstart Tech Co. Takes Commuting To A Better Place

Electric cars have often been a source of controversy in the last few years.  Fans claim that the average person doesn’t need an above-average range, while haters still cling to the argument of long charging times.

Shai Agasse, an Israeli businessman, realized that there was only one way to silence the critics:  force the EV developers to put out or get out.  The resulting company, “Better Place,” has worked with Renault, Nissan, and others, to develop a new standard for batteries and electric car charging.  Some of the ideas that are presented are great, while the rest of them are freakin’ awesome.

For those of you still hatin’ on the idea of electric vehicles, check out this video.  It shows what the average electric car owner would have to go through in a day in order to keep his emissions-free bitchin’ ride on the road:

To find out how the details work, and if there’s an info centre near you, check out their website at betterplace.com

Daily Roddin’: Chevy SSR at Gauthier Chevrolet

Chevy SSR Roadster Pickup at Jim Gauthier Chevrolet, Winnipeg

This bitchin’ Chevy SSR roadster pickup awaits its new owner in the wash bay at Jim Gauthier Chevrolet, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  While this truck was just part of their regular inventory, someday it might end up in a different part of the dealership–specifically, the dealership’s own auto museum.

“Kowalski Edition” 2011 Dodge Challenger!

We think Bob Frederick, of New Wilmington PA, may have an unhealthy obsession with the movie “Vanishing Point.”  We also know that he owns a Dodge dealership.  Put the two together, and you get the “Kowalski Edition” 2011 Dodge Challenger.

Kowalski Edition Dodge Challenger SRT-8

For those car movie phillistines who don’t know, “Vanishing Point” is a cult classic film about a car delivery guy named Stanley Kowalski.  Tasked with driving a white 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T from Colorado to California, he takes a bet that it can’t be done in 15 hours.  The police and two bulldozers get involved, and somehow it all ends up turning into an Audioslave video:

The Challengers are loaded up with the 392 Hemi, full SRT-8 package, wooden shifter grip, and 20″ wheels–and available only in white.  Sadly, the entire production run of ten cars is counted for, which means it might take Nott Autocorp an extra week to find you one.

Daily Roddin’: Alan Gingle’s Phantom Essex Pickup

Alan Gingle's Phantom Essex Pickup

Take a good, long last look at the phantom Essex pickup truck, owned by Alan Gingles of Neepawa, MB.  Alan has been a good friend and contributor to this site in the past.  However, he’s now in the process of completely re-doing this little truck with a fresh small-block Chevy, flat black paint, and a more comfortable interior.

Cruisin’ the Capital in 2011!

Rat Rod at Brockville Car Show 2010

Larry Way, Ottawa’s auto show guru, just gave us the skinny on the UniglassPlus Ziebart Car Show Series (presented by Canadian Classic Cars).  It might be just a schedule to some people, but to us, it’s enough to stop the presses.  That is, if we actually used presses.  Here’s what Larry had to say, in his own words:

The summer car shows are just around the corner and it looks like another great season will be ahead.

The first UniglassPlus Ziebart Car Show Series Presented by Canadian Classic Cars is at Monkey Joe’s on May 14. Westgate Shopping Centre (where Monkey Joe’s is located) has been dug up to lay new water pipes. There is one lane of gravel going into the parking lot. It is scheduled to be repaved on May 30. Our parking lot is fine and it will be business as usual.

Monkey Joe’s Car Shows will continue to have a wide array of door prizes. There is a twist this year though. Each car owner will receive a ballot to be entered in the final draws at Cruizin into Fall & you must be present to win. There will be two ballot boxes this year. One will to be eligible for a set of Firestone tires, a Mega Touch video game compliments of Parker Auto Care, or a Mac Tools die cast set. The second ballot box will be for a pass for two people for the February bus tour to the Detroit Autorama Car Show which includes return transportation, two nights hotel, two VIP passes and invitations to a VIP reception. This will guarantee you two spots on the bus. If you win & you are already scheduled to go then you will go for free. This is sponsored by Young’s Speed & Performance. Each participant will have their choice as to which ballot box they want to put their entry.  All Monkey Joe’s dash plaques are sponsored by Campbell Ford.

The Carling Avenue Super Cruise will be on Saturday June 11. Carling Ave. will be under construction in certain spots but the cruise will still happen. There will be discounted meals at Monkey Joe’s and at A & W at Carlingwood Shopping Centre. There will also be a Poker Run. Cards can be picked up in  the Monkey Joe’s parking lot from 7:00pm – 7:15pm, 8:00pm – 8:15pm, and so on at 9pm, 10pm & 11pm. The participant with the best poker hand will win $100.00 in A & W gift cards with prizes for second & third best hands. Cards will only be available for the first 15 minutes of each of the five hours. If you miss one, then hope the four cards you have make it.

Boston Pizza cruise nights return again on five Sundays. Each time you attend you will receive a ballot to win Pizza for a year. The draw will be on the last show date on Sunday September 11 & you must be present to win.

Boston Pizza dash plaques are sponsored by Rockland Ford.

Canadian Classic Cars will have their car show on Sunday May 29 with a cruise night/show on Thursday September 22. They have a beautiful showroom with 40 cars for sale & a large die cast selection.

We will have a Capital City Speedway night on Wednesday August 17.

Dave Parker & Parker Auto Care have been strong supporters of the car community for many years and Dave is having another show at his shop on Saturday August 6.

Our Cheo Charity Car Show at the Hazeldean Mall will be on Sunday August 28. Dash plaques courtesy of Campbell Ford & awards compliments of Johnson Welding Works.

Our shows are open at all years, makes & models of vehicles and are all sponsored and all free with the exception of the Cheo Charity Show where there is a $5.00 charge per vehicle with all the monies going to CHEO.

Let’s look forward to a safe & fun car show summer!

True confessions of a shaggin’ wagon builder

Shaggin’ wagons were the driving force behind the car customization industry in the ’70s.  And while some of those rides would elicit a big thumbs up from pedestrians and onlookers, others would elicit a question–who would build such a freaky machine?

Peter Cheney, automotive journalist extraordinaire, has just confessed to being one of those mechanics.  And after reading his side of the story at the Globe & Mail website, we have a better question:  Who would order a machine like that from a mechanic? (via the Globe & Mail’s “Drive” section)
